Last week in class we watched a film called the Electronic Storyteller: Television and the Cultivation of Values.I loved discussing what we watched in this film during class. There are so many things that myself and others do everyday that we don't even realize as an effect from watching television. People do things such as making sure they live in a gated community or living in a high rise apartment because they think that those things will protect them from being a victim of crime. My favorite thing that we talked about was the way that African American television shows were distorted from reality. Shows such as The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and The Cosby Show shows a wealthy rich African American family but in reality most are seen as criminals, drug dealers and middle class. I like there are shows such as the Cosby show and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air out there though because I feel like it gives hope and faith to people out there that they can be successful as an African American as well. Overall I loved the film and the things that i learned from it. However, how television is distorted was the main thing that I took from the film.

I too also enjoyed the film. Our generation has been raised on the TV, so we obtain a lot of our beliefs and ideas from the television shows that we watch. The one negative thing that I did not like about the film (Well, not negative, but it'll change me forever) is the fact that now every time I watch TV, I will always be over analyzing every little thing that a character does or what is being used in the show. If this is the only negative thing though, then I can live with that. They say that ignorance is bliss, but in the case of television and society, I'd rather be miserable and informed than blissful and ignorant.
ReplyDeleteYes a great show and and the film had a solid point. Although our generation doesnt see too much of the message that is being portrayed it does still show that if you try hard enough anything is possible.
