Herman Cain...Bill Clinton

I'm not sure how many of you are familiar with the Republican hopeful nomination for presidency  Herman Cain. Well he has been involved in a lot of scandals lately. A few women have come forward in the past couple of months saying that Cain has had some type of affair with them and other allegations have been made between him and other women as well. With all the allegations I'm not nor is Cain sure if it will be enough to withdraw from the GOP contest or not. I wonder how his wife feels about these allegations and if she believes them. I know his family is hurting right now because of it. I feel bad because I feel like a person like Herman Cain are giving men a bad reputation especially as a father and a husband. It just takes me back to the Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky scandal. It's showing that men in power try to use their power to their advantage, which isn't right. Not all men or political figures are Herman Cain or Bill Clinton. Do you think that Political leaders such as Cain and Clinton are giving men a bad name? Below is a video of the most recent accusation against Cain and Cain denying the 13-year affair.

Are Cartoon's really beneficial for our children?

After doing a paper in my child's psychology class and creating my own cartoon for this class I questioned if cartoons are benefiting kids or hurting them? I will be the first to admit that I still watch cartoons and think that they are very entertaining but for children I'm not sure.I know what's right and what's wrong, and that's what children are learning. One cartoon I watched was the kids cartoon "The Backyardigans". I liked it because the children went on adventures in their backyards and it was very colorful and eye catching,  It showed children having an imagination just by using their backyards and I loved that. I didn't like the dangerous stunts that were shown in the cartoon however. The characters would stand on one foot while a horse is moving and without falling which is unrealistic for children to do. I don't want kids watching it and getting the wrong impression that they can do those things and think they wont get hurt from it. are these shows like "the Backyardigans"  really educating our kids with things such as having an imagination or hurting them by showing that it's okay to do certain things and make them believe that they wont get hurt? I'm not sure what the answer is because no cartoon is going to be perfect, but they could improve I believe.

Pornography

After watching the documentary about pornography I left class with a headache! While watching the documentary so much was going through my mind. things such as why do women do this, why do they let me treat them like this, is this the only way to make good money. I left class looking at porn in such a different light. It is no longer looked at to me as a mean of pleasurably for people but just objectivity for women. Women are clearly just objects in the majority of these porns and it's a sad sight to see. Women such as Jenna Jameson is trying to justify porn and make it seem as a respectable career. No it's not. It'w women(i use that term lightly) subjectify themselves as objects to these men just to please them. Their bodies are taking such a punishment that how can any women even enjoy sex anymore. I know that their vagina's are stretched beyond belief. This documentary changed my outlook on sex in general. I know it may seem like the documentary terrified me but no that's not it because I watched porn before but not like it was displayed in the documentary. I was looking at it in a different light this time then as entertainment. I'm not a big porn fan either. Pornographic videos are now making it hard for us non-porno stars sex life. Now men are going to watch porn or do watch porn and expect the same things from those women in the porn in real life. I am not a porn star so don't expect me to perform like one.

"My Fair Wedding"

From looking at so many reality TV shows about weddings I see what Erika Engstrom is talking about when she says a bride is looked at as a physical object. the show Bridal Plasty especially proves her point I believe. These days women forget why they are getting married and are looked at as just objects and not seeing the big picture and that's having a life long partnership with your significant other. The show BridalPlasty I believe is a perfect example. The show is a competition with 12 brides to be who compete for their dream wedding and also a list of plastic surgery procedures to get done before their big day. It's just crazy to me that women will go to this extreme just for that ONE day. They have to be away from their fiances for 4 months. I wouldn't want to be away from the man I love and am about to spend the rest of my life with for that long. What if their fiance doesn't like the way they have transformed? Then what? They are stuck with it. The man is suppose to love you for just the way you are. I know my boyfriend wouldn't like for me to go on a show like this. I wonder if the show interviews the husbands to be their opinions on what their fiances are doing.

It's just entertainment?

Taking a look back at things that we have talked about in the course so far and the one that sticks out most to me is the topic of wrestiling and how it disrepects women. I am a BIG fan of wrestling, or was, i dont't really watch it anymore but I've never noticed how badly women were displayed on the show until now. When I watched it is was funny to me and pure entertainment. Now that I'm older and I look back at some clips of WWE I realize that women were treated as objects and not human beings. I know that seeing barely dressed women and seeing women get thrown around or fighting half dressed is just for entertainment but watching it now is kind of heartbreaking. Women are so much more than that. I believe that wrestling has come a long way and that women are looked at slightly different now in the entertainment business but there will always be that mindset for men I believe that women should be half naked and at ring side supporting their man. That is their role in my eyes and I'm not sure how much of that is going to change.
Below is a clip of just how women are treated in the WWE

Cosmetic surgery

Talking about cosmetic surgery in class opened my eyes up to just how "normal" it is for people to get that kind of surgery done, when before it was looked down upon or only the wealthy could afford it. I believe that having shows that have people getting the surgery done such as Extreme Makeover makes it seem to others that surgery is safe, nothing can go wrong, affordable and that anyone should get it to improve their life. Getting surgery doesn't always make things better and not everyone's surgery goes as planned or expected. I think that it encourages people to get the surgery done without talking about the pain, the money, the aftermath of the surgery or recovery process. They just show a before and after of the surgery. So it kind of plays a mind trick on some people. However there are some shows that do provide that such as Nip/Tuck as we discussed in class. With Nip/Tuck the cosmetic isn't glamorous at all as it may seem like it is in Extreme Makeover. I'm happy that there is a show like Nip/Tuck to show just how gruesome surgery can be even if I may not like to watch it because it would make me sick to my stomach.

Die hard 4!

After watching and discussing the movie Die Hard 4 today in class my eyes opened up to a lot of different things. I never knew that so much goes into a movie about gender and the role that it plays in today's society.Women are usually looked at as the weaker individual and dependent of a man but in this movie the main two female characters were strong physical individuals and mentally as well. Because of past generations, society considers men as the alpha male. The three pictures below shows an alpha male, a women being in control of a man and a man being in control of a women. The way gender is shown in movies has come a long way and I hope that movies will continue to make movies a little similar to Die hard 4 that shows that there are and can be an Alpha female as well.
